Detroit Red Wings owner Christopher Ilitch has hired a search firm to help find the team's new general manager, according to a report by the Detroit Free Press on Wednesday.
Ilitch and the firm are expected to seek analytics-driven leadership.
The new hire will be expected to navigate the team's 10-year playoff drought and captain Dylan Larkin's trade request.
The team has been searching for a replacement general manager since franchise legend Steve Yzerman abruptly stepped down from the role three weeks ago.
Yzerman served as the team's GM since 2019. The Red Wings did not make the playoffs during his entire tenure as general manager.
He announced in mid-July that he would be transitioning to a senior advisor role within the organization.
The timing of this move was a surprise for many as he had just managed the NHL Draft and free-agency rush for the team.
The team's assistant general manager, Shawn Horcoff, has been handling GM duties in the meantime while the team seeks new leadership.
